This week: Imagine

Because of the shallow depth of field, most of the image is out of focus … including the end of a pine needle that looks a little bit like a person standing next to another pine needle … here’s a close up with it marked (just use your imagination to *see* it)

Week 1 | 52 in 2012

Here goes year 3 of an image a week … this time around I’ve even sat down ahead of time and decided what theme I’ll shoot each week rather than coming up with something spur of the moment each week like I did the last two years!

This week: Motion

The idea on what type of motion to capture this week came from the Understanding Shutter Speed book by Bryan Peterson … I was trying to think up something outside the *norm* for a motion shot and this was it. For those wondering what the actual scene is of, it is a hillside of oak trees taken just before sunset on New Year’s Day.

Flashback Saturday | Athens Texas Photographer

While skimming through the external drives in search of some other images, I found a folder from just over a year ago of the blossoms I’d photographed … since it was late at night, I grabbed one of the first images in the folder to edit … more to come as I find some downtime!

Just a quick PSA (public service announcement): If you call during the day on M-F, please be sure you leave a phone number that I can reach you at to return your call. If your number is not showing up (aka blocked or ‘unknown’) and you don’t provide it on your message, I won’t be able to call you back. The best time to actually catch me via phone (due to weekday employer policies I cannot answer non-emergency personal calls while at work, apologies) is between 6:30 pm and 9 pm on M-F and between 9 am and 4 pm on Saturdays.

Flashback Saturday | Athens Texas Photographer

Digging through the 2010 archives this week to find a few particular images I wanted to have prints made of (to add to the Etsy store), I found this one that was overlooked. I really wasn’t going for the high key look although I was backlighting it in front of an etched glass door. Really haven’t been much on the color yellow in the past but its slowly starting to grow on me … meanwhile I think I might be bringing back the old watermark from 2009 (seen on the image above) or some variation of it.

Yesterday morning I woke up, slapped the alarm off while I bleary-eyed reached across my nightstand for my cell phone so I could pull up Weatherbug to check the temperature outside. That done, I loaded up Tweetcaster so I could get my morning news and gossip via Twitter. The further into the tweets I read from news outlets, media (anchors, reporters, meterologists, etc) as well as fellow photographers located in Hawaii, my heart dropped. I pulled up my email and sent out a quick email to my Japanese penpal, who, the last time I heard, was working in South Korea. She’s from north of Toyko, so I was worried at the least for her family. Afterwards I crawled out of bed, got ready, and went into the kitchen, I turned the tv on. The tweets didn’t begin to describe the devastation from the earthquake and the following tsunami. I forced down breakfast, grabbed my stuff and headed out the door. As I was leaving, it hit me that my cousin and her family are stationed in Japan right now (she’s discharged from the Air Force, her husband is still serving.) They’re further south (in Okinawa) thankfully.

Meanwhile, if you’d like to help the victims of the earthquake & tsunami in Japan … here’s some links I found via Time.com, the Huffington Post, and the UNICEF websites (all text below is copied straight from their websites):

The Red Cross: The Japanese Red Cross has already deployed 11 national disaster response teams to respond to the crisis but you can support their efforts by donating money. Similar to their efforts to help Haiti after the earthquake in 2010, Red Cross is accepting donations either online or via text message. Simply text REDCROSS to 90999 to donate $10 from your phone (you’ll be prompted to confirm with a second text reading YES).

Salvation Army personnel are organizing efforts in Tokyo and will soon send a team to help the severely damaged city of Sendai, Japan. To contribute to the organization’s efforts in Japan, text ‘JAPAN’ or ‘QUAKE’ to 80888 to make a $10 donation or visit SalvationArmyUSA.org.

The Japan Earthquake and Tsunami Relief Fund was launched at GlobalGiving.org to garner funds for relief organizations helping victims and has already raised thousands, particularly from concerned Twitter users around the world. The project page explains:

We are working with International Medical Corps, Save the Children, and other organizations on the ground to provide support. Our partners on the ground are working hard to provide immediate relief.

For any who have loved ones abroad, Google has stepped up to help. Along with a tsunami alert posted on their front page, they’ve launched the Person Finder to help connect people that may have been displaced due to the disaster.

UNICEF is also accepting donations for disaster relief efforts — more details are available here.

Bitten by the Traveling Bug | East Texas Based Travel & Fine Art Photographer

Over the last few months, one of my 2010 weekly images has received quite a bit of attention at Etsy & Flickr …

Between my Etsy shop (and via direct email inquiries) for Christmas orders and now treasury listings (here, here, and here), I’m in the process of creating a four season series of ‘Bitten by the Traveling Bug’. Fall & winter editions are now complete, just waiting on spring (and summer) to arrive so I can finish out the series. I have other photo ideas for that little bus as well as I find time to carry them out

Interested in purchasing a print of the above image? I have two *in stock* listed at Etsy and other sizes/options (i.e. canvas & float wraps) are available for custom ordering via email.

Other in stock images are available for purchase in the Etsy shop … with both Mother’s Day and Father’s Day on the horizon, there’s a variety available for the perfect gift!

8 days shy of a year from our last *good* snow here in East Texas (the last one of 2010 was the first day of spring) … spotted this feather left behind while I was out photographing details on my snow day off work.

A Bit of Sunshine | Athens Texas Photographer

After the dreary, cold, snowy (in some areas in north and east Texas) start to the week, I dug through the external drives to find a bit of sunshine in the form of billy balls (or so that’s what I’ve heard those little yellow blooms are called) … these were the last survivors of a bouquet of flowers I received last summer from Aly & Daniel.
